School Budget Cuts

In California Governor Arnold has proposed drastic budget cuts in education. This will have a huge effect on the schools in San Diego county. Check out the sidebar of this article to see some of the proposed cuts of various school districts.

Some districts will be cutting programs like music and art, others will cut employees like nurses, and still others will be cutting teachers. San Diego City Schools has proposed cutting 630 classroom teachers.

Should we be concerned at CCHS? No one is talking about any funding problems for us (we don't get money from the government) but can the problems at public schools effect us? I have friends that work at public schools and , as far as I know, their jobs are safe so far. But I feel very fortunate to be working at CCHS right now.

What do you think?

Governor + Prostitute = Big Mess!

Eliot Spitzer was (until recently) the Governor of the State of New York. (Read more about him here and here.) He was known for being tough on crime. He was the state attorney general before he was elected governor. Now it appears he was involved with at least one "lady of the night."

Yesterday he resigned as governor. The NY state legislature would have likely impeached him (yes, states have impeachment procedures also) if he did not resign on his own.

Why do you think he made the decision to resign? What does this scandal say about his leadership abilities? Have there been other politicians involved in similar scandals?

Don't be afraid to do a little research . . .

What are Candidates speaking about?

Check out this awesome graph I found on Dow Jones Insight Election Blog via O'Reilly Radar.

I don't really understand how they did it but I love looking at charts and graphs.

Anti-immigration = hate group?

The San Diego Union Tribune ran a story today that cites a study that says there is an increase in hate groups, many of which target Latinos.

Read the story here.

I see two issues here. 1. If someone wants laws enforced that restrict immigration does that necessarily mean that they are racist? and 2. What counts as a "hate group"?

In California, it seems clear to me that when we talk about immigration we are talking about people coming to the US from Mexico. Are some anti-immigration folks racist? Possibly. Are all of them? Maybe - maybe not. How can you tell?

What are your thoughts?

McCain wraps it up, Hillary and Obama continue to battle!

A few months ago when there were still several Republicans fighting for their party's nomination some people were concerned that this would hurt their chances of winning the presidency. If the Republicans are busy fighting each other, who will fight the Democrats?

Back then many people assumed that Hillary Clinton would win the Democratic nomination and she would sail through while the Republicans battled each other.

Now that McCain has secured the nomination and Barak Obama has become a political force to reckon with, it looks like the Democrats are having the problem that people thought the Republicans would have.

Do you agree that this is a problem? Why or why not?

Who will be president? I like buttons!

Check out the Delegate Counter Game.

This interactive map on CNN.com allows you to speculate on who will win the Democratic and Republican (is this still a mystery?) primaries. You can allocate delegates from the remaining states and see what each candidate needs to win their party's nomination.

You may notice that Republicans need 1191 delegates to win their party's nomination while Democrats need 2025. Why are these numbers different?
